Student Services is working with the District Home and School club to put together 40-50 backpacks full of holiday spirit. Students will receive some essentials such as toiletries, as well as come holiday surprises.  We will be handing these backpacks out on the 20th if you want to donate anything to our foster and homeless youth please bring it by Student Services by the 14th.

Think Critically

Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer.
TED Talk
Can you look at someone's face and know what they're feeling? Does everyone experience happiness, sadness and anxiety the same way? What are emotions anyway? For the past 25 years, psychology professor Lisa Feldman Barrett has mapped facial expressions, scanned brains and analyzed hundreds of physiology studies to understand what emotions really are. She shares the results of her exhaustive research -- and explains how we may have more control over our emotions than we think.

Upcoming

12/12: SCCOE district rep meeting (SS)
12/13: 6-ADULT leadership meeting
12/19: CENSUS unstable housing subcommittee

Attendance

Attendance will start to be more focused on in the coming weeks because of its' impact on our district but not just in money lost but, in what the students lose as well. Chronic Absenteeism or Truancy can both lead a student to falling behind in their studies, causing them to be disengaged at school, and then leading to worse attendance or behavior.
I recently sent out a document to attendance clerks and principals so that we can set up a team at each school site and then try to assist these students who have red flags on their attendance. These new interventions will hopefully bring students back to school and be present in their classes.

  • On November 28 we assist during the Food Distribution event at PA Walsh, despite the rain and cold most of the families attended.
  • Thursday December 6th we supported our School Linked Coordinator in the last Food Distribution of this year at PA Walsh. We were so happy to see so many families receiving food for the holidays.

CARE team updates

The CARE team has added two new members, Jordon Godinez and Danielle Warren. Jordon will focus on attendance, while Danielle will be a mobile team member working at different school sites.
  • As we wrap up the calendar year and move into 2019, The CARE team has been assisting at multiple food distributions and strengthening our community partnerships.
  • The community closet in San Martin has offered to assist any of our families in need of clothes.
  • We are making CARE packages for some of our students who will need extra support during the Holiday break.
  • Last November CARE team assisted Nutrition Services Department distributing pumpkin pie to students in the district. We were delighted to see all students enjoying the unexpected treat.
