STUDENT SERVICES PROJECTS

CASCWA Conference 2019
Student Services attended the CASCWA conference regarding attendance and a MTSS model to support students who are not coming to school. There was lots of positive information that came from this conference including model SART and SARB Teams, positive attendance incentives (growth and summative), new legal updates, etc.

PBIS Symposium at SCCOE
SCCOE hosted its 5th annual PBIS Symposium and there were lots of Morgan Hill teachers and admin representing! The sessions raged from Building COST tams, Uncovering your voice for equity, ways to confront the Buzz of JUUL and Vaping, to Radical Resilience and Inclusion strategies. Reach out to Julie, Michelle or myself for more information and we look forward to meeting with site admin to discuss PD opportunities for next year.

As we continue our work in improving attendance it is important to look at growths, and areas of need. We are never "losing" we are either improving or learning. With that I would like to highlight some of the data:
Picture
Our foster and homeless students make up around 6% of our populations in our schools, yet they have the highest levels of chronic absenteeism. I encourage your leadership teams to be asking some of the following questions:
1. What are we doing to provide support specific to these populations?
2. Can you list who these students are? How would you identity them, or find out who the are?
3. What data are you looking at and how often are you looking at it regarding these populations?

TED TALKS

GRIT: The power of passion and perseverance
Angela Lee Duckworth

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success.

BOOK STUDY

Duclified
Dr. Lisa Ramirez

Picture
This beautiful book offers an autobiographical account of extreme resiliency, as Dr. Lisa Ramirez recounts her early childhood experiences facing brutal instances of neglect and abuse at the hands of those that should have offered love, comfort and protection. She recounts her own failed attempts at pursuing a basic education, while lacking the bare necessities of a home, food, and positive relationships—all requisites for survival and thriving in an educational setting. As you read her narrative, you will come to understand why hers is, indeed, a beautiful story. You will gain a deeper understanding of resiliency, and the major difference that educators (and all of us as human beings, for that matter) can make in the lives of children, even through (seemingly) insignificant actions.

The Final Stretch
We are only 6 weeks away to the end of the school year,  we are very pleased to see the improvement that participating students in the CARE groups have accomplished. We are going to continue working with students to help them stay on track throughout the end of the school year.

Parent Project
We are headed into the 8th week of the first cycle of the Parent Project. The parents have been responding well and seem genuinely excited to have been given this opportunity. We are continuing to accept families for the first cycle of the Spanish version starting Fall 2019. (Dates TBD)
Please reach out to us with families you believe would benefit from this course.
We are also accepting families for the second cycle of the English version as well.

Safe Parking Vacancy
There is availability for Safe Parking spots open to families in need. This site has case managers that will work with the family to secure low income housing and offers food assistance. At least one person in the family must be working in order to qualify. If you know of any family in need, please reach out to us so we can connect them with this service.

191 Re-certification
We have begun the re-certification process with all students with a 191 classification. We have been reaching out to them by making calls to their primary contact per Aeries. If you have a family that expresses concern as result of this process, please let the know that this is a crucial step in servicing our them and enables us to provide efficient support from the first to the last day of school.
