Attendance Recovery

Saturday Academy

Saturday Academy is an optional program that provides students with additional learning opportunities outside of the regular school week, typically on Saturdays. It’s designed to support academic growth, improve attendance, and offer enrichment activities. Students may attend to make up missed instructional time, receive targeted help in specific subjects, or participate in engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Attendance at Saturday Academy can sometimes be used to recover lost instructional minutes, helping to address chronic absenteeism while fostering stronger connections with school.

Attendance Recovery

California's new attendance recovery program is a voluntary initiative for local educational agencies (LEAs) to help students make up for lost instructional time and for schools to recoup funding tied to average daily attendance (ADA). While similar to the long-standing concept of Saturday Academy, the new policy, which began in the 2025-2026 fiscal year, expands the options for when and how this can be done.
Here's a quick breakdown of the differences:
  • Expanded Scheduling: While Saturday Academy traditionally operates on weekends, the new attendance recovery program allows for make-up sessions to be held before or after school, on weekends, or during intersession breaks.
  • Increased Recovery Limit: The new policy allows students to recover up to 10 days of attendance in a school year, or the total number of days they were absent, whichever is less. This is an increase from the previous limit for weekend make-up classes.
  • Voluntary but for All: The program is voluntary for both schools to offer and for students to attend. However, it's designed for all classroom-based students, whereas Saturday Academy has sometimes been used as a mandatory consequence for truancy or a component of specific enrichment programs.
  • Purpose: Both programs aim to address absenteeism and recover funding. However, the new attendance recovery program emphasizes a broader strategy of student re-engagement and is explicitly linked to a new alternative chronic absenteeism indicator that will be published by the California Department of Education (CDE).
